The Russian Red Cross is to provide individual humanitarian kits to the population affected by floods in the region of Yakutia
      21.07.2022

The Russian Red Cross (RRC), the oldest humanitarian organization in the country, has joined the process of providing assistance to the population affected by floods in the Verkhoyanskiy district of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). The regional branch of RRC prepared 450 individual kits of humanitarian aid for the residents of flooded households. The RRC is to start distributing the kits shortly.

Due to heavy rains in the upper reaches of the river Dulagakh in the Verkhoyanskiy district of Yakutia, the water level has risen sharply. There was declared the state of emergency in the region. The settlements of Suordakh and Tomtor were flooded. The population of these settlements is about 600 people, including over 160 children.

The Yakutsk regional branch of the Russian Red Cross became the main coordinator of the humanitarian aid for those affected in the region. The affected communities will receive humanitarian aid kits, namely hygiene kits (soap, shampoos, toothpaste), food kits and kits with basic necessities (blankets, pillows). Individual kits for the flood-affected people in Yakutia were collected by the Russian Red Cross with the support of RNG company (RNG is a part of EASTSIB HOLDING group of companies).

“We are monitoring attentively the situation in the Verkhoyanskiy district and are in close contact with the regional executive authorities (The Committee for Emergency Situations). The RRC branch in the city of Yakutsk managed to form 450 individual kits, which contain all the necessary goods”, said Pavel Savchuk, the President of the Russian Red Cross.

On the basis of the Yakutsk regional branch of the RRC, aid collection points have been opened, as well as a special bank account for donations to the flood-affected.

“The Yakutsk regional branch of the RRC has joined to the humanitarian aid for the affected by the emergency situation in the Verkhoyanskiy district. We are assisting in providing and recruiting volunteers who have already been acting actively in receiving and sorting humanitarian aid from the population”, said Alena Kychkina, the chairman of the Yakutsk regional office of the RRC.

The damage was caused not only to the property of the region’s residents, but also to social facilities and farmland. Three socially important objects (school, kindergarten, medical and obstetric unit), 88 plots of household land, including 85 houses with 317 inhabitants, remain flooded in the village of Suordakh.

In the village of Tomtor a school, a medical and obstetric unit, 95 plots of household land, 50 houses with 265 inhabitants, among them 85 children, remain flooded. A danger situation also takes place in the village of Betenkes on the bank of the Adycha River.

A number of other villages are under the threat of flooding due to rising water levels in the rivers of Sartan, Yana and Adycha. The regional offices of the Russian Red Cross will provide assistance to the affected residents of the region as needed.
