      30.10.2023

The Russian Red Cross (RRC), which is the oldest humanitarian organization in Russia, is capacitating 40 specialists from Russian regions for emergency response. The nationwide team will be capable of participating in humanitarian missions and assisting affected populations throughout the country.

The workshop, with the participation of specialists from 16 regions of Russia, is being held in the Moscow region till November 3, 2023.

“The workshop is devoted to expanding the range of specialists we can call upon to respond to various emergencies, should the need arise. Earlier we held a number of workshops to prepare regional teams. For this time, we have gathered specialists from 16 regions for a nationwide workshop. This will help us in building up the system of emergencies response by the Russian Red Cross, expanding the geographical coverage and our capacities in this work”, commented the Head of the Emergency Response Department of the Russian Red Cross Alexey Pikul.

Workshops for regional teams this year took place in the city of Voronezh, twice (in two different subject matters) in the city of Rostov-on-Don, and also in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). The workshop in the Moscow region is held to capacitate the nationwide team.

During the six-day workshop, trainees will get theoretical and practical skills in providing psychological first aid to those suffered, as well as first aid under special conditions. Beyond that, the workshop participants will learn the principles of setting up a base camp, organizing radio communication in emergencies, the basics of organizing the search for the lost in the natural environment, the principles of triage in major emergencies and much more. The workshop participants will be able to consolidate the acquired skills via emergency response procedures in field conditions.

On the final day of the workshop, a comprehensive final simulation of an emergency situation will be organized with the engagement of trainees. This will allow practicing the acquired skills of first aid, first psychological aid, reading topographic maps and land navigation. Alongside these activities, the participants will practice their skills of radio communication, as well as the organization of the process to provide assistance to those suffered in emergencies.

“This simulation is to include imitation of several practical conditions such as searching for victims in environmental settings, assisting victims of household gas explosions, receiving evacuated victims from rescue services for triage, assisting and further evacuation”, – accentuated Alexey Pikul.

Once the workshop is completed, trainees are to be engaged by the Department of Emergency Response of the Russian Red Cross to assist in emergencies throughout the country.
