An Italian journalist who was injured by a mine explosion in the Kherson region has been treated and is already on his way home to Italy. The Russian Red Cross (RRC), Russia's oldest humanitarian organization, organized his treatment in Russia and the escort and transfer of the foreign journalist through Russian territory.
The incident happened last week. A car of freelance journalist Mattia Sorbi, who was working in Ukraine for a number of Italian televisions and newspapers, triggered a mine. According to media reports, the Italian correspondent was injured and his driver was killed - everything happened not far fr om the frontline in the Kherson region. Mattia Sorbi was saved and taken to a Kherson hospital.
“The President of the Italian Red Cross, Francesco Rocca, asked us to help return the journalist to Italy. We quickly responded to the request. National Societies always support each other, and we have a long-standing strong cooperation with the Italian Red Cross. We got in touch with Mattia and learned that he was well cared for and his health was stable. The Kherson hospital, wh ere the journalist was treated, organized his transportation to Crimea, where the Russian Red Cross took him under its care and provided further logistics,” said Pavel Savchuk, President of the Russian Red Cross.
The RRC arranged transportation of the wounded journalist fr om Crimea to Mineralnye Vody, wh ere he underwent a complete medical examination at one of the city's medical centers.
After all necessary procedures, examinations and preparation of documents were completed, the RRC experts escorted Mattia aboard a direct flight to Italy. At the moment, the journalist's life and health are not in danger.
