The Russian Red Cross (hereinafter RRC) has launched a nationwide fundraising campaign to support people affected by flooding across Russia’s regions, as well as to prepare for potential floods expected this spring. Funds will be used to deliver humanitarian aid and psychological support to those in need..
According to forecasts by relevant authorities, this year’s spring flooding may affect a significant number of regions. Due to the snow water equivalent being two to three times above the norm in some areas, the risk of flooding remains in central Russia, Siberia, the Volga region and the Urals. The Republic of Dagestan, Ingushetia, the Chechen Republic, Irkutsk Region, Krasnoyarsk Territory, Bashkortostan, the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area and the Moscow Region have already been affected.
“Flooding always requires a rapid and coordinated response, especially in the first days, when people need support the most. We already see serious consequences of flooding in a number of regions, and we understand that the situation may worsen soondue to active snowmelt and high river levels. The nationwide fundraising campaign will enable us to respond quickly to emergencies and support those affected from the very first days,” said Pavel Savchuk, President of the RRC.
The RRC is already responding in Dagestan. Regional staff and volunteers are assisting with the evacuation of residents, delivering water, food, clothing and footwear, and providing psychosocial support. In the coming days, the response will be stepped up with support from the national emergency response team, including work to dry affected buildings.
